Present Nostalgia, 2019

Present Nostalgia Artist Statement:

“Present Nostalgia” is the longing for today to linger. Or the longing for this moment in the future.

There’s a feeling I get sometimes when I experience beauty in nature. It’s a sadness and a delight, interwoven. It comes because I know that moment and that place may not be able to be experienced in the same way in the future, possibly in the near future.

Especially lately, I find myself wanting to capture my own intimate, embodied experiences of a place with artifacts and depicted ethereal scenes. Gathering newsprint, shells, seaweed and cedar tangled with trash, I bring the scenes and its artifacts back to my studio to keep me company and help me remember. Some pieces even make their way into paintings. These paintings are a collection of those daydreams, dreamscapes; they’re cataloged impressions of beauty from a particular place and time.

Our coast is a great treasure. These paintings are a recording and celebration of that.

May this body of work bring pleasure and spark solidarity to fight for the places that inspire and connect us to the earth and each other.
