Love is a Frontier, 2017

This series is inspired by moving west and falling in love with the colors and light here in British Columbia. During a ferry ride to the south island of Haida Gwaii last summer, I’d squinted my eyes from the bright light off the surface of the ocean; my eyes were open just enough to see the light take simple shape and color. What a pleasure to see triangles dancing on the water.

Since then I’ve been obsessed with portraying this sense of connecting with the land and, when it happens, feeling glee like a child experiencing something for the first time.

Maybe next time you see the horizon you can squint your eyes just enough to let the shapes and color envelope you.

These works were shown at the ARC (Artist Resource Centre) in my studio during the 2017 Eastside Culture Crawl.
